LOGLINE: The false bishop’s fate is sealed. He will arrive in a land of gold to escape his own past.
SYNOPSIS: Armando Perea, a hustler who loses even the shirt off his back in a dice game with a dangerous man from Pereira, escapes certain death disguised as a priest. Chance leads him to a forgotten mining town in Chocó during Colombia’s 1980s gold rush, where his improvised absolutions end up turning him into the spiritual leader of a community where gold, myths, and magic coexist.
Nicknamed “The Bishop,” Armando discovers that faith can also be a very profitable business and uses ancient mining beliefs to build his own kingdom of gold, power, and excess. But when he falls in love with Anatú, the formidable leader of thirty women miners, his false identity begins to work against him. Caught between partners who keep a close eye on him and a man from his past who returns to destroy him, this charming rogue will discover that even the cleverest man can let his guard down—and lose everything.

WHY THIS PROJECT: THE GOLDEN BISHOP was born from the memories of an adventurer who experienced Colombia’s mining world firsthand during the 1980s, in a remote town in Chocó. Those stories gave rise to a universe of antiheroes, gold, beliefs, and excess, where an extraordinary reality finds its natural language in dark comedy and magical realism.
For me, this story also has deeply personal roots. My grandfather was Black, and in my family the fantastic coexisted naturally with everyday life; that sense of magical reality is also part of what inspired my love of storytelling. *"THE GOLDEN BISHOP" grows out of that memory and that perspective, bringing to the screen a rarely portrayed Colombia through humor, irreverence, and deeply human characters.
